Plant-Based Treaty Initiative
Richmond Hill City Council’s upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, October 22, will feature a range of notable items, including major planning updates, zoning applications, and a climate-focused motion on sustainable food systems.
Among the presentations, councillors will hear from Lindsay Toth, Principal at Gladki Planning Associates Inc., who will provide an update on the East Beaver Creek Secondary Plan. The plan will help guide future development and land use in one of Richmond Hill’s key employment and commercial areas.
Council will also review a request for approval of a zoning by-law amendment and subdivision application concerning several residential properties located at 35, 37, 39, and 41 Edgar Avenue and 20 Scott Drive. The proposal, filed under City Files ZBLA-24-0009 and SUB-24-0003, affects portions of Lots 8 and 9 on Registered Plan 3852 and Lots 77 to 79 on Registered Plan 1930.
A report addressing council compensation for the next term, beginning in 2026, will also be presented for discussion.
In addition, Councillor Thompson has introduced a Member Motion proposing that Richmond Hill endorse the Plant-Based Treaty Initiative, a global movement encouraging local governments to prioritize sustainable food systems as part of climate action. The motion cites the city’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP) and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food production.
If adopted, the motion would commit Richmond Hill to promoting plant-based food options at city meetings and events, encouraging local organizations to do the same, and exploring public education opportunities on the environmental and health benefits of plant-centric diets.
The Committee of the Whole meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. on October 22 at City Hall and will be livestreamed through the City of Richmond Hill’s website.
