Richmond Hill’s Star Attraction Still Shines
The City of Richmond Hill  has received a provincial conservation awardprovincial conservation award for its continued efforts to protect and restore the historic David Dunlap Observatory (DDO) lands. The recognition highlights the city’s leadership in preserving both the site’s natural environment and its cultural heritage.
The David Dunlap Observatory, home to Canada’s largest optical telescope, has been undergoing major restoration work in recent years as part of the city’s long-term plan to make the 190-acre site a hub for science, education, and green space. The project includes habitat restoration, trail improvements, and upgrades to the observatory buildings.
Mayor David West praised the award as “a proud moment for Richmond Hill,” saying it reflects the city’s commitment to “protecting heritage while promoting sustainability and community engagement.”
The award comes as the city continues implementing the DDO Park Master Plan, ensuring the observatory and its surrounding lands remain a vital landmark for generations to come.
