A major Don Valley Parkway shutdown this weekend sparked complaints from some Richmond Hill residents questioning why one of the region’s key routes into Toronto was closed during a busy spring weekend.

For many Richmond Hill residents hoping to head downtown this weekend, the drive may begin with an unexpected detour.

Toronto’s Don Valley Parkway is fully closed from Highway 401 to the Gardiner Expressway until early Monday morning for scheduled maintenance and infrastructure work, creating major disruptions on one of the primary routes connecting York Region to the city core.

The closure quickly sparked frustration online, with some residents questioning why such a significant shutdown was scheduled during a spring weekend packed with concerts, sporting events, festivals, and recreational trips into Toronto.

“Why close it on a weekend when everyone actually wants to go downtown?” one social media user wrote, while others described expected gridlock on alternate routes including Highway 401 and city streets.

For suburban residents in communities like Richmond Hill, the reaction reflects more than just traffic irritation. It also highlights how heavily the region still depends on a limited number of major corridors to access Toronto’s cultural, entertainment, and employment hubs.

While the DVP closure is temporary — and city officials say the work is necessary — the disruption became a reminder of the delicate balance between maintaining aging infrastructure and keeping the Greater Toronto Area connected.

The closure comes as Toronto continues to prepare infrastructure upgrades linked to future international events, including FIFA World Cup matches, while also carrying out regular road maintenance work across the city.

No full weekend closures have been reported on Highways 400, 404, 401, or 427, though delays are expected throughout the region as drivers seek alternate routes. Additional downtown road closures tied to Sunday’s Sporting Life 10K are also expected to affect traffic near the waterfront and core.
