A collision involving a sedan and a Viva bus at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Leslie Street sparked a fresh round of debate online this week, as Richmond Hill residents questioned the safety of one of the town’s busiest intersections.

Photos shared Tuesday evening on Reddit appeared to show a sedan with significant front-end damage after colliding with a York Region Transit Viva bus around 8:30 p.m. on May 12. No official information on injuries or charges had been released by Wednesday afternoon.

York Regional Police had not posted a public release specifically about the collision as of publication time, though the force continues to encourage residents to report dangerous driving incidents through its Road Watch program and public reporting channels.

While commenters stopped short of directly blaming the intersection design for the collision itself, many echoed arguments commonly made by road safety advocates — that features such as permissive left turns, wide arterial roads and complex highway-adjacent intersections can increase the likelihood or severity of crashes when combined with heavy traffic and driver error..

The discussion reflects broader concerns in Richmond Hill about traffic safety on major arterial roads, particularly around high-speed intersections connected to Highway 404.

The intersection sits near several commercial plazas, transit stops and cycling routes, carrying heavy commuter traffic throughout the day. Residents have previously raised concerns about traffic timing, turning movements and visibility in the area.
