Richmond Hill residents will have a local place to cheer for Team Canada this Friday as the city hosts its first World Cup watch party at Richmond Green Park.
The free event, scheduled for Friday, June 12, begins at 2 p.m. at Richmond Green, 1300 Elgin Mills Rd. E. Canada’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina is expected to begin at 3 p.m., with the city planning a full afternoon of soccer-themed activities before and during the game.
The watch party is part of Richmond Hill’s series of public match-day gatherings connected to Canada’s World Cup run. The city is encouraging residents to bring lawn chairs or blankets, wear team colours and arrive early for free swag, available while quantities last.
Friday’s event will include DJs, event vendors, a selfie corner, a soccer ball message board where fans can send good-luck wishes to Team Canada, and a strolling stilt-walker soccer performer. Richmond Hill Soccer Club is also expected to be on site with inflatable soccer darts, mascots, demonstrations and other activities.
One of the featured attractions is inflatable human foosball by Party Tyme Entertainment, adding a hands-on soccer element for families and younger fans. A halftime show by trickster performer Hosna Mirhadi is scheduled between 3:45 and 4 p.m.
For Richmond Hill, the event is more than just a match screening. Public watch parties can turn big international games into local civic moments, giving residents a reason to gather in parks and squares instead of watching alone at home. They also offer a glimpse of how public spaces can serve as community living rooms when there is programming, seating, food, music and a shared reason to show up.
The city has three more watch parties planned after Friday’s opener. Canada’s match against Qatar is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at Dave Barrow Civic Square, followed by Canada vs. Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24, also at Dave Barrow Civic Square. A final-match watch party is planned for Sunday, July 19, back at Richmond Green Park.
For Friday’s Canada-Bosnia event, activities are scheduled to run from 2 to 6 p.m. Match details and timing may change depending on the official broadcast schedule.
