A Somber Norouz in Richmond Hill

Nowruz Celebrated in Richmond Hill Amid Concern for Iran

By Staff Report

RICHMOND HILL β€” Members of the local Iranian community are marking Norouz this week with a mix of tradition, concern, and solidarity, as events unfold in Iran continue to weigh heavily on families here.

While the Iranian New Year is typically a time of renewal, gatherings, and celebration, many in Richmond Hill say this year feels different. Community members are navigating the emotional strain of being unable to reach loved ones back home, citing ongoing internet disruptions that have left some families without contact for weeks.

At the same time, local organizers say the celebrations have taken on an added role: helping to share a clearer picture of events in Iran with friends, neighbours, and the broader public. Cultural displays, conversations, and community events are being used not only to celebrate heritage, but also to raise awareness.

Since protests began earlier this year, Richmond Hill has also seen regular weekend demonstrations in support of those in Iran. These gatherings have become a familiar sight along major streets, drawing residents who carry signs, wave flags, and call for attention to the situation overseas.

For many, this year’s Nowruz is both a moment of cultural pride and a reminder of the distance β€” and uncertainty β€” separating families across borders.
