Richmond Hill soccer fans will have another reason to gather downtown this weekend as Canada prepares to face Morocco in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.
The matchup was confirmed after Morocco defeated the Netherlands on Monday night, winning on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw. Canada had already booked its place in the next round with a 1-0 win over South Africa on Sunday, keeping the host nation’s historic run alive.
In Richmond Hill, that Sunday win was not only celebrated on the field. A large crowd gathered at Dave Barrow Civic Square for the City’s public watch party, where residents cheered together, waved flags and shared in the excitement of Canada’s victory. The turnout showed that Richmond Hill does not have to look elsewhere for big community moments. When the opportunity is there, RHers will show up.
The next watch party is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, at Dave Barrow Civic Square, east of the Central Library Branch at 1 Atkinson Street. The City says activities will run from 12 to 4 p.m., with the Canada-Morocco match shown from 1 to 3 p.m.
The event will include music, vendors, giveaways, family-friendly soccer activities and a large-screen viewing experience. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, arrive early and wear their Canada colours.
For Richmond Hill, the watch parties have become more than a place to follow the World Cup. They are also a reminder that the city has the public spaces, the people and the appetite for shared local events. Sunday’s turnout at Dave Barrow Civic Square offered a simple message: Richmond Hill can host its own moments of celebration, close to home.
