First Night

The Vibe: Family-friendly festive energy without the midnight burnout. When: Wednesday, December 31 | 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. Where: Bayview Hill Community Centre & Park (114 Spadina Road) Cost: Free!

Why It’s This Week’s Top Pick

New Year’s Eve often feels like a choice between an expensive late-night gala or staying on the couch. Richmond Hill’s First Night offers a perfect middle ground that’s especially great for families or those who simply prefer to be in their pajamas by midnight.

Here is why it’s our must-attend event for the final week of 2025:

  • The “Early Countdown”: The highlight of the night is the spectacular fire show and countdown at 5:30 p.m. It gives you all the excitement of ringing in 2026 with a crowd, but you’ll be home in time for dinner.
  • Showcasing the New Park: This year’s event is a grand debut for the newly renovated Bayview Hill Park. It’s the perfect excuse to test out the brand-new outdoor skating pad (bring your own skates!).
  • A “Fire and Ice” Spectacle: The schedule is packed for a short window. You can catch the Scarlet Black Fire Show, the Circus Drummer Skate Show (beats and movement on ice), and even a Canadian Beatboxing Champion, Scott Jackson.
  • Defrost with a Dip: If the outdoor air gets too crisp, the city is offering two complimentary leisure swims indoors (3–4 p.m. and 5–6 p.m.) with live music from DJ Mista Chow.

Pro-Tips for Your Visit

  • Skate Prep: There are no rentals on-site, so make sure your skates are sharpened and ready before you head out.
  • Warm Treats: Keep some pocket change ready for the food vendors—nothing beats a hot chocolate while watching a fire show.
  • Arrival: The leisure swims are first-come, first-served with a capacity of 280, so get in line early if you’re planning to take a plunge!
