A large crowd gathered Thursday evening at Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park as the City of Richmond Hill hosted a community flag-raising event to honour and stand in solidarity with local residents supporting ongoing protests in Iran.
The event, held at 6 p.m., brought together residents, activists and public officials at one of Richmond Hill’s most prominent public spaces on Elgin Mills Road East. Municipal officials had advised in advance that traffic delays and increased attendance were expected in the area as supporters arrived for the evening’s proceedings.
While the official City announcement did not detail the specific symbolism of the flag raised, many in the local Iranian-Canadian community had called for recognition and a visible gesture of support for protestors in Iran and for those affected by ongoing human rights concerns abroad. Community groups in Richmond Hill had previously circulated petitions seeking symbolic acknowledgements in solidarity with demonstrators advocating for freedom and human rights.
