York Region Public Health is warning residents about a possible measles exposure connected to a confirmed case that was present in Richmond Hill while infectious. Officials say anyone who visited the emergency room at Mackenzie Health on Tuesday, May 19, between 10:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. may have been exposed to the virus.
Public Health says those who may have been exposed should monitor for symptoms until June 9. Symptoms of measles can include fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes and a rash that typically begins on the face before spreading.
Officials are urging residents to confirm they have received two doses of the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV). People who are pregnant, immunocompromised, or were with infants under 12 months old at the exposure site are advised to contact York Region Public Health immediately, as they may qualify for preventive treatment.
The Region is also asking anyone who believes they may have been exposed to complete the online follow-up survey available through the Region’s measles reporting page.
