Richmond Hill advances major pedestrian bridge for Observatory Lane
In a move to enhance connectivity and safety, the Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory Park (RHDDO) is getting a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the railway tracks — and construction is now underway.
The ambitious infrastructure project will link the park to 63 Observatory Lane, providing a direct, dedicated route for walkers and cyclists. The work includes not just the bridge itself, but also a new 14-space parking lot, an entry plaza, upgraded trails, pedestrian lighting, site furnishings and tree plantings.
Key upcoming work
The crucial span of the bridge is scheduled for installation over the Canadian National Railway (CN) tracks overnight from 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 16 to approximately 2 a.m. on Friday, October 17.
To support that installation, full road closures will be in place on Observatory Lane and Sunshine Drive (from Marshall Street to Moonlight Lane), starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday and expected to last until 7 p.m. Friday. Emergency vehicles and local traffic will still have access; all other traffic will be detoured via Moonlight Lane.
During construction, a section of the RHDDO trail network will be closed for safety reasons. The observatory and remaining portions of the park will remain open to the public.
Why the project matters
City officials note that the new bridge is intended to improve safety by removing the need for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate busy or less-safe crossings of the railway corridor. It also expands accessibility to the park and supports the broader RHDDO Park Master Plan, which emphasises better trails, natural area restoration and public enjoyment of the site.
Impact on residents
Motorists in the vicinity — especially on Observatory Lane and Sunshine Drive — should expect the detours and closures during the overnight work and plan accordingly. Pedestrians and park users are advised to avoid the closed trail section and be alert for construction activity in the area. The city thanks residents for their patience during the implementation phase.
As the project proceeds, Richmond Hill residents can look forward to a more connected and safe link between the David Dunlap Observatory Park and surrounding neighbourhoods — a tangible investment in active transportation and public space.
