Richmond Hill considers funding expansion of police CCTV network

By City Desk

Richmond Hill council will consider a motion from Councillor Liu to fund additional closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in partnership with York Regional Police.

The motion, tabled for the April 1 Committee of the Whole meeting, proposes allocating up to $20,000 for the acquisition of as many as five new CCTV cameras. The cameras would be installed at locations within the city selected by police based on crime data and public safety priorities.

According to the motion, York Regional Police already operates a network of CCTV cameras across the region, including 10 in Richmond Hill, following a 2023 approval by the police services board. The expansion is framed as part of a broader, data-driven approach to crime prevention and investigations.

Funding for the proposed cameras would come from the cityโ€™s Community Enhancement and Economic Vitality Reserve Fund, which supports initiatives aimed at improving quality of life.

The motion was seconded by the Mayor David West and is expected to be debated as council continues to explore measures to enhance community safety.
