RHPL Adjusts Hoopla Borrowing Limit

Last Updated: October 16, 2025Categories: News

The Richmond Hill Public Library (RHPL) is updating how members access one of its most popular online services. Beginning November 1, 2025, the borrowing limit for Hoopla will change to five (5) items per borrower per month.

In a notice to users, RHPL explained that Hoopla’s cost-per-circulation model—which charges the library each time an item is borrowed or renewed—makes budgeting unpredictable. The adjustment, the library said, will help maintain the long-term affordability and accessibility of the service for all members.

To help users get the most out of Hoopla, RHPL recommends borrowing titles only when ready to read, watch, or listen, saving others to “favourites” for later, and exploring the BingePass option, which provides access to an entire collection for one week using just one borrow.

While Hoopla remains a key part of RHPL’s digital offerings, it’s far from the only one. Library members can also access:

Libby (by OverDrive) – ebooks and audiobooks in English, Chinese, Persian, and Russian

Cantook Station – French-language ebooks and audiobooks

Kanopy – streaming movies and TV series

NFB Education – more than 5,200 documentaries, animations, and short films (in-library use only)

With its wide selection of digital platforms, RHPL continues to stand out for the richness and variety of its online resources—offering residents a wealth of ways to read, watch, and learn from the comfort of home.
