A woman died crossing a Richmond Hill street. Help us push for safer crossings.

  • News

Strong Richmond Hill is seeking volunteers to help examine walking conditions, ask officials for answers and build a campaign for safer streets.

By Staff Writer

A 32-year-old woman has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near Major Mackenzie Drive East and Spadina Road.

According to York Regional Police, officers responded to the collision at approximately 7:45 a.m. on September 24. The woman was taken to hospital, where she later died. The driver remained at the scene. Police are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage as their investigation continues.

Behind those few details is a person whose death leaves family, friends and others grieving.

The information released so far does not establish what caused the collision. We should not speculate about the actions of the woman or the driver. But we can ask an essential question: What can be done to make walking here safer?

For Strong Richmond Hill, safe streets are a core priority. People should be able to cross a street to reach work, school, a bus stop or a neighbour without facing conditions that leave little room for human error. Street design should help prevent mistakes from becoming fatal.

We want to move this concern toward practical action: document the intersection’s walking conditions, ask about previous collisions and safety concerns, and seek a public response from the responsible authorities about possible improvements.

That work takes people. Our small volunteer group needs more help to carry it forward.

An hour of your time can help

You do not need to be a traffic engineer or commit to a large ongoing role. We are looking for people who can help with one manageable task:

  • Observe and photograph: Visit the intersection with another volunteer and document crossings, visibility, signals and turning movements from safe public locations.
  • Research and ask questions: Help gather available information and prepare questions for York Region and Richmond Hill about safety reviews and potential improvements.
  • Keep the work moving: Help organize findings, track official responses and prepare updates for residents.

If you regularly walk through this intersection, your experience matters too. Tell us what crossing there is like and what concerns you have. Residents’ observations can help guide questions, even though they cannot establish what happened in this particular collision.

Our proposed first goal is straightforward: seek a public pedestrian-safety review of the intersection, consideration of immediate improvements, and a clear timetable for next steps.

We cannot promise a particular outcome. We can build a group willing to ask, document and follow through.

If you can contribute an hour, local knowledge or a useful skill, join Strong Richmond Hill and let us know you would like to help with the street-safety campaign.

A safer crossing begins with people willing to work for it.

Anyone who witnessed the September 24 collision or has relevant dashcam footage should contact York Regional Police’s Major Collision Investigations Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7704. Anonymous information can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
