What Are Those Devices Appearing on Richmond Hill Streets?

  • News

City-installed equipment is counting vehicles and pedestrians to help guide traffic safety decisions.

Residents may have noticed unusual-looking devices attached to signposts around Richmond Hill. According to Ward 5 Councillor Karen Cilevitz, there’s no reason for alarm.

In a recent Instagram post, Cilevitz said she checked with City Bylaw and Transportation staff, who confirmed the devices are part of Richmond Hill’s annual traffic data collection program.

The equipment measures vehicle and pedestrian volumes, helping City engineers investigate traffic safety concerns and determine whether changes such as traffic calming measures, new traffic signals or four-way stops are warranted.

Cilevitz also clarified that the devices are not surveillance cameras and are not intended for visual tracking or security purposes.

The collected information can help the City make better-informed transportation decisions.

But collecting data is only the first step. For residents concerned about dangerous intersections and unsafe crossings, what matters most is how that information translates into safer streets.
