A woman and a child riding a bicycle were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Richmond Hill Thursday evening, according to York Regional Police.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Elgin Mills Road and Redstone Road at approximately 7:50 p.m. following reports of a cyclist being struck by a vehicle. Police said the bicycle was carrying an adult woman and a child at the time of the collision.
Both victims were transported to hospital with serious injuries. Police have not released the age or gender of the child.
Investigators remained at the scene for several hours Thursday night as members of the collision investigation unit examined the area. Westbound lanes near the intersection were temporarily closed but later reopened.
According to police, the driver involved remained at the scene. No information has been released regarding possible charges, and investigators have not yet said what may have led to the collision.
The incident prompted renewed discussion online about road safety for vulnerable road users, particularly cyclists and families travelling through suburban intersections and arterial roads.
