Metrolinx is inviting the public to name the pair of tunnel boring machines that will dig the tunnels for the Yonge North Subway Extension. Suggestions are open until November 16, 2026.

The agency is encouraging ideas inspired by local landmarks, history, famous people or something personally meaningful. With two machines to name, entrants can also suggest a pair of names that go together.

Richmond and Hill? Yonge and Restless? Consider those our brainstorming warm-up.

After submissions close, a panel will select finalist names, which Metrolinx says will be posted on the contest page for a public vote. Whoever supplies a winning name will receive credit and could have an opportunity to meet the machines for a photo at the tunnel launch shaft.

The project will extend TTC Line 1 approximately eight kilometres north from Finch Station to Richmond Hill, adding five stations.

For residents who usually encounter subway construction through notices and detours, the contest offers a small, playful way to take part.

Have a better pair of names? Read the rules and submit your suggestions through the official Metrolinx contest page by November 16. Tell us what you would call them, too.
